Classes are a central part of our program at WLC. We have class time every day, usually for about an hour. (Check out A Day at WLC to see how class time fits into our daily rhythm.)
Our classes are organized around four-week units, each on a different topic. Tuesday students are studying one unit while Thursday students are doing another, and the classes are usually divided by age groups as well—our Lucky Cats are our 9- to 15-year olds, and our Lucky Kittens are our 5- to 8-year olds.
In planning our classes, we try to center activities that incorporate experience-based group learning, like student debates, team games, reader’s theater, and performances. Our classes expose the kids to lots of different subject areas—even some that might seem uninteresting or overwhelming at first (like biology, or Shakespeare!), but wind up being really fulfilling.
In between each unit is one “activity week,” featuring a fun, one-off activity—like concocting Halloween potions, making mini-zines, having a chess seminar, or planting a garden for Earth Day.
By the end of the year, Tuesday and Thursday students will each have completed eight different units—or, if they attend both days, sixteen!
